a first ...
I had my first baby shower this past weekend!! It was a casual affair, picture this: girls drinking wine, eating yummy food and talking smack! The lovely Mary Margaret hosted at her newly renovated home (NICE kitchen, Mary) and my good girlfriends from RHI were there. It was a lot of fun; a nice "celebration" during this long wait to get my little boy. And of course I got some fun gifts for JD! I love my girlfriends :)

slowly, but surely ...
Now that 2010 is here, the Korean govt is beginning the process again of issuing emigration permits for all the babies who were stalled in the international adoption process during the latter half of 2009. My little guy is just one babe who was caught in this red tape mess. The Korean govt met their 2009 annual quota for children looking to emigrate for int'l adoption in June 2009 (much earlier than usual), although nobody here in the U.S. knew it at the time - we didn't find out that we for sure wouldn't travel until October.
So here is what needs to happen before we can travel to pick up our cute little nugget:

- The Korean Ministry of Health & Welfare needs to issue him an emigration permit. The korean social welfare agency our child was referred to us by, Eastern, submits children's files in batches. One batch has been submitted already in January, but ours did not make the cut (9 families ahead of us did and we are around #12 on the wait list). As of today, our file as yet to have been submitted, but we are hopeful it will be by Feb 1st. Once it's submitted to the Ministry, it usually takes 4-6 weeks to process.
- At that point, his file moves over to the US Embassy in Seoul, where they take 3 weeks to process his Visa. And then (drumroll please) WE GET OUR TRAVEL CALL!!
So looks like mid-late March in Korea! :)

update, continued ...
To answer some questions I've received regarding JD's 10-month update:
This is the 1st update we've received in the 5 months since we got his referral (back in August). It took 7+ weeks for them to get the update to us, hence I don't anticipate that we'll receive another - although I'd gladly accept one :)
He has 4 teeth (probably has more by now) and looks like he's starting to get the courage to take a step or 2 (before plopping down).
Like many of you who have already brought your little ones home from Korea, I am also surprised at how late my little guy goes to bed, how long he sleeps and how little he naps. But Janet, a fellow blogger and Mom to a cutie from S. Korea, makes a good point that they probably don't count the times that the little ones fall asleep while being carried on their foster mother's back in a podaegi.
And yes, he's a big eater - I need to step it up with my strength training to build up my biceps so I can carry him! He weighed a little over 23 lbs at 10 months, so he's a healthy boy!
Hopefully we're looking at 2 months or less until we can hold him and bring him home!

here's the latest update on my little guy ...
Our little man is doing well with his foster family in Korea! Below is the written update on our little guy as of December 18th (at age 10 months):
Hello.
This is the 10-month update that you asked for.
*feeding: Ho Kyeong drinks 240cc of milk every four hours and drinks the bottle all at once. When he drinks, he does not hold the bottle himself; the foster mother holds him and feeds him. For solids, he eats pieces of steamed rice, soft cookies/crackers, fruit, etc. He does not like boiled rice [porridge].
*toilet, bathing & sleeping habits: He has one good bowel movement per day. He likes being given a bath. When he is sleepy, he drinks milk and then on his own, on a futon laid out on the ground, he rolls around and then falls asleep. He falls asleep at around 11:00 p.m. and gets up in the morning at about 6-7:00 a.m. He naps once a day for about one hour. He sleeps with his foster mother on a futon laid out on the floor. Her rolls around while he sleeps.
*development: He babbles and says “umma” [Korean word for mommy] and “bbabba” [may be similar of ahppa which is daddy in Korean]. When he is in a particularly good mood, he yells. He focuses in on pictures that he looks at and he likes having music played. He has some stranger anxiety. He recognizes his foster mother and likes her. He does “dohree dohree” and “jahk jahk koong” [Korean nursery rhymes with hand movements] and has a lot of curiosity. He knows when he is being scolded and when he is being praised. He takes toys away from others. He opens drawers and tosses around all the things in the drawer. He walks well holding onto the sofa. He can take just about one step not holding onto the sofa.
